Ingredients needed for applesauce crumb cake
For the cake
- Flour: You’ll use all purpose flour.
- Spices: You’ll be using a combination of ground cinnamon, ground cloves and allspice.
- Baking powder: To help the cake rise.
- Baking soda: To help the cake rise.
- Salt
- Sugar: You’ll be using both granulated sugar and brown sugar. Both of these will create the perfect sweetness to the cake.
- Egg: One large egg.
- Oil: Any neutral oil will work- vegetable or avocado oil.
- Applesauce: Use unsweetened applesauce.
- Vanilla extract
- Apples: I prefer using either granny smith or honey crisp apples.
For the crumble topping
- Butter. Unsalted, cold butter will be used. Take the butter out right before using.
- Sugar: You’ll be using brown sugar.
- Flour: All purpose flour.
- Oats: Use old fashioned oats and not quick oats. As quick oats will change the texture of the crumble topping.
- Ground cinnamon
How to make the applesauce coffee cake
- In a medium bowl, combine flour, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, allspice, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, stir together oil, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Add the applesauce and mix until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently mix until incorporated.
- Add the chopped apples and gently mix.
- Pour cake batter into prepared springform pan.
How to make the crumb topping
- To a small bowl, add butter, flour, brown sugar, oats and ground cinnamon. With a pastry cutter, fork or your hands, crumble the butter util mixture has small crumbles.
- Sprinkle the streusel topping on top of the batter.
- Bake for 35-45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean and topping is golden brown.
Tips for success
- Lightly butter and flour the springform pan. This will prevent the cake form sticking to the sides.
- Don’t overmix the batter. Mix every step until everything is smooth and just incorporated.
- Use granny smith or honey crisp apples. These don’t get mushy after baking. Granny smith apples are more tart the honey crisp.
- Use unsweetened applesauce. As this cake will have sugar added to it, use unsweetened applesauce.
How to store apple crumb cake
Once the cake has cooled off, store in an airtight container. Or cover with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. The leftover cake will keep up to 4 days room temperature and up to 1 week in the refrigerator.

Ingredients
For the applesauce cake
- 1 ¾ cup all purpose flour
- 1 ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon each: ground cloves, allspice
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup vegetable or avocado oil
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup brown sugar, lightly packed
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1–2 small apples, chopped, optional
For crumble topping
- 4 tablespoons unsated butter, cut into cubes, cold
- ¼ cup all purpose flour
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- ⅓ cup old fashioned rolled oats
- ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 F.
- Butter and lightly flour 8 inch springform pan. Set aside.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, ground cinnamon, cloves, allspice, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, stir together oil, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Add the applesauce and mix until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and gently mix until incorporated.
- Add the chopped apples and gently mix.
- Pour into prepared springform pan.
- To make the crumble topping: To a small mixing bowl, add butter, flour, brown sugar, oats and ground cinnamon. With a pastry cutter, fork or your hands, crumble the butter util mixture resembles small crumbles.
